My son must be the luckiest kid in the world. We have been talking about the new Disney Infinity game for months, and he got to review it at the Nintendo Store in Rockefeller Center in NYC today.
“Disney Infinity is an all-new video game initiative starring the beloved characters from Walt Disney and Pixar Studios’ most popular franchises. Players can place real-world toy versions of their favorite Disney characters onto a device called the Infinity Base and transport them into the virtual game worlds of Monsters University, the Incredibles, Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lone Ranger, as well as into a giant Toy Box.”
We walked in the store at 10 minutes to 3 and were ushered up to the 2nd floor for a private party to learn about and play with the new Disney Infinity video game system that officially hits the store shelves on Sunday, August 18th. Except for a break where he had to listen to instructions, by the creators of the actual game (wow!) and share the console with 2 other kids, my son played non-stop, over 2 hours. By the way, this was work, this did not count towards his limit of video game play for the weekend. How smart is my son?
I am not the video reviewer, my son is. He is just over 10 years old, and I believe kids today must have gaming instincts, all the consoles set up had the game on the Wii U. We do not have a Wii U (yet) and I am fairly certain my son has never played with that console, ever. Yet, he picked it up and began playing and figuring it out right away.
I have been excited about this game because I am a huge Disney fan. The thought of mixing Disney worlds like Monsters U. and The Incredibles is beyond brilliant to me. And that is just the beginning of what will be years of adding many more characters from the Disney library, perhaps a decade! There goes the college fund.
Yes, I have also been collecting figures for the game. I am pretty sure this will be the next round of collectible items that I will be buying for many months to come for my son (and some for me, I want Ralph and Vanellope for starters, available October!). The game pieces all work with any game console, and they are programmed to remember all the data from previous games.
The game works on several levels. And let me make sure you know, this is a non tech review, there are plenty of gamer sites that can tell you the minutiae of this game, I am just here to report back what I see and what my reviewer says. You can play games in the world of your characters. For example, my son was playing with the Pirates of the Caribbean Play Set:
“No matter the Play Set, your adventure will always be different. Whether you are racing Cars around canyons, sailing the high seas with Pirates of the Caribbean or creeping around Monsters University campus, there will always be new worlds to discover… and endless fun!”
There are currently 5 playsets that will be available, and many more to be released over the next several years! The ones available now are The Lone Ranger, The Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters University, The Incredibles, and Cars. Can you just imagine how many more movies will be incorporated into this game!
And you can also then head into the Toy Box:
“In the DISNEY INFINITY Toy Box, you can make your own worlds, create games with your own rules, or build places that only exist in your imagination. When you’re done, you can knock it all down and start again.”
Lastly, there are power discs that you can purchase separately for the game:
“DISNEY INFINITY Power Discs can be used to improve and enhance the DISNEY INFINITY experience in a multitude of ways. Circular Power Discs are used to grant your character special power ups that can be used in Play Sets and in the Toy Box. Hexagonal Power Discs unlock special gadgets, vehicles, and themes to allow for even more personalization in the Toy Box. Different combinations mean different results, the possibilities are endless!”
And it was great to watch the other children with us, especially the girls, to get an added perspective. One girl had Mrs. Incredible in a Cinderella coach doing wheelies off of an obstacle course. It was hilarious, but that is the whole point, you get to mix up many the Disney worlds!
My reviewer says this game is a hit. And even though we hope to have the Xbox version sent to us, we are checking the prices at our local shop for a Nintendo Wii U, that console works really well with this game and like I said, it is my son’s work! He loved playing this game, there are so many levels to the play! This is going to be the hottest game of the year, that was pretty clear from the interest level of everyone at the event, and especially from the expert reviewer I have on staff, my son!

And, we are in the game!
These look like so much fun and I know my kids would absolutely LOVE them!
Oh wow – does that look like FUN!! What a lucky kid! I agree – I think kids today are born with some kind of technology gene. We’ll definitely have to look out for this new game come Christmas!
Disney Infinity is awesome! Of course, we are big Disney fans here, so just about anything Disney puts out is awesome. It’s truly fun for the whole family. Thanks for the review.
I’ve seen this advertised a few places, and I’m definitely interested. Sounds like lots of good fun.
That is so cool! It’s awesome how they are programmed to remember data from previous games.
I have been seeing so much buzz about this new game. My kids are teens so I’m not sure they would play it all that much but I’m tempted to get it anyway. It looks like so much fun! I’m sure this will be one of THE hot toys this holiday season.
Oh, you are making me look like the Grandma Superstar of Sacramento! Just let my grandson know about this..Yeah!!! He has been so waiting for this to come out.. And (thanks to you) I was able to let him know that the DAY HAS COME! ♥
I would love to get our kids the Disney Infinity Toys! They look like so much awesome fun! Heck, I think I would even play with them!
Totally awesome, my boys would flip!
This would be such a hit in my house!
Looks like fun! I agree on the technology gene thing. I’m 22 so my parents think I’m a tech wizz but modern day kids amaze me – watching 1.5 year olds play smartphone or tablet games and open the app up by themselves and everything just blows my mind, haha.
I’m intrigued by the Infinity game, but I think I need to see it in person to have a better understanding. For now, I think my kids are too young.
I would like this for me! My son is a little too young but I could have a blast with it. I’m so glad your son had a blast working with you!
