I was sent this Blu-ray for review purposes. For the sake of full disclosure, I had seen the movie in the theater and already reviewed some of its content here.
My son’s birthday was on May 29th and I had received the movie that same day so we popped it in after dinner. We had just seen the Wizard of Oz the weekend prior so that movie “sequel” was fresh in our minds.
It was very exciting to watch the this movie with him and explain some of the nuances he might not have caught, like when Oscar is chatting with the woman we know will someday be Dorothy’s mom. It was also great to watch with my son when the Lion becomes the Cowardly Lion, something I myself did not catch the first time I saw the movie, a friend had to explain that one!
And now that all spoilers have been published since the movie has been in the theaters, I am going to go into detail about why I absolutely loved this movie. First, the scene where Mila Kunis turns from Theodora into the Wicked Witch of the West, is wonderful and hearkens directly back to my memories of Margaret Hamilton and her screen time in the Wizard of Oz. I thought the characterization of the newly created Wicked Witch was spot on, with no heart she became more evil than the wicked sister who created her. Mila gave it her all and she was fabulously evil!
I also am thrilled to have a copy of this at home so I can view again and again the scenes were the good people of Oz start a mock attack on the Emerald City, where we get to see those poppy fields in action 20 years before they put Dorothy to sleep! I loved all that ensues as well, especially Oscar’s almost escape in his hot air balloon with the city’s gold which then makes it seem like he is immediately incarnated as a spirit to scare the 2 bad witches!. Again, this movie set up many aspects of the movie from 1939 that we all have memorized. I think those set-ups were done perfectly. Even my spouse was intrigued and he is as jaded as they come!
And the extras that I mentioned above! We rarely watch those extras even though I always want to. We were all so excited about this movie that we sat down a second time as a family and watched Mila Kunis transform into the Wicked Witch. She is fabulous, she is on my list of celebs I must meet!
And James Franco interviews his co-stars and the Director. He is a riot, and a very smart man. I thought his portrayal of the flim-flam Oscar DIggs was terrific.
And, time to get corny, I fell in love with China Girl. Her porcelain look made it seem like she was crying, and she had me crying as Oz fixed her legs with his magical potion (glue!).
This is a must own DVD for our home.

I am so geared up to finally get this movie! But I’m disappointed-and surprised-that Disney isn’t doing any in-store bonus exclusives for the movie, like the bonus disc with The Avengers at Target and the toys and accessories Walmart had for films like The Muppets and Lady and the Tramp.

My family and I viewed together last night, so exciting! Have to check out the extras.I think the second screen thing is a little bit of a gyp-why aren’t they simply included on the blu-ray?!

For those of you who haven’t checked them out, those bloopers are great! Just make sure you turn up your TV volume as the sound on them is REALLY low!

James Franco’s short film he shot as a behind-the-scenes was amazing. I only wish it had been longer! All the backstage footage was really cool. I wonder why he got to interview the whole cast but not Rachel Weisz (“Evanora”).
