The last couple of years I have gotten off easy. We had cupcakes at school, we had a cake at my in-laws, and my folks celebrated with us. Birthday celebrations covered, no fuss, no muss.
This year my son said he wanted a bowling party. I thought, well, the school stops the cupcake thing after 3rd grade, my parents will be out of town, and I had a 10 year old birthday bowling party, so lets do it!
His friend had a bowling party at a local bowling alley last year so I thought, I will just repeat that. I will admit, I am a blogger and asked for a discount. I did receive 15% off for writing about the event which I was going to share this with you anyway, but since this is partially sponsored, later on I will tell you what I thought of this venue.
I thought the fairest way to have a 10th birthday party was to keep the list small, and only invite his current classmates. He has a great group of friends in 4th grade in every class, but I could not invite 30 boys!
Thankfully the boys had a blast. And my son was so happy, at one point we hugged. The hug ended and then he looked at me and said he wanted more hug. I know my son, I could tell he was truly appreciative of this experience. And that is all I wanted, for him to be happy. I did also tell him to thank the other dad who did pay for this!
Now lets talk about Bowlmor. We went to the Union Square location. Like I said, we went to a bowling party there last year and we were quite satisfied with the experience. They are within walking distance from our neighborhood so I knew it would be convenient for everyone we invited. And, as part of their Colonial Studies in 4th grade, all the kids had just been to this same location on a school field trip bowling in a game called Nine-Pins.
They gave us 2 alleys to bowl in. My son remarked that there were a lot of TV screens above the individual alleys and he thought it was so cool that some of his favorite shows were up on those screens.Me, I am all about the ease of scoring – I will always laugh to myself looking at the modern electronic equipment now in use at bowling alleys, they register your score every time you throw the ball. In my day you had a half sized pencil and a score sheet to write down your scores! No cheating anymore! Not that we every did!
My picture does not do the food justice, but I took a package where we got pizza, chicken fingers, french fries, and a fruit plate. And I had the feeling if the children ate non-stop the staff would have continued to fill up the hot plates the whole time, we never ran out of food. Did I mention there was almost an unlimited choice of beverages?
My contact was the event manager. She was not the person who I had negotiated my package with, I met her for the first time when we showed up for our party. I will tell you what I said on the survey that I just filled out for Bowlmor – she was excellent, she kept stopping by to see if we needed anything, almost every 15 minutes. This is in addition to the waitress who also kept replenishing everything, even the 8 beverage offerings they gave us. I had no expectations regarding the service, like I said I had been to a party here the year before and didn’t notice anything other than the service seemed fine, so I was almost taken aback by how attentive the staff were! It was wonderful and helped keep me calm. I don’t know about you, I never enjoy a party I am throwing, I am always concerned that my guests have a great time. Maybe that is why I don’t throw a lot of parties!
Again, my son was thrilled with his birthday party. He had everything he wanted, a fun time, good food, and most importantly good friends. He couldn’t stop thanking me, and you know this blogger/couponer gave the kids the best gift bag they will ever receive!
Disclosure: We received a 15% discount for including our write up about the Bowlmor bowling alley. All opinions are 100% honest and my own. They were amazing, I would have written that without receiving any discount.
And the greatest memory, my bowling pin from my 10th birthday party 44 years ago, along side my son”s bowling pin from his 10th birthday!

wow, what a super cool party. And even cooler that he has a birthday bowling pin, just like yours
What a cool way to celebrate the 10th birthday. All the more so when you have birthday pins to compare.
What an excellent party! I think it’s a great venue for a kids party and he’s just the right age for it. I love that you guys now have matching pins 🙂 what a fantastic memory item for you both.
