Interviewing these 2 was like talking to a snail and a slug. Oh, yeah, those are the characters they play!
Chris O’Dowd voices Grub the snail, and Aziz Ansari voices Mub the slug. The only work I know of either of the 2 was Chris’s work in Bridesmaid where he played a “straight man,” a non comedic role . Imagine my surprise when all we heard from their first interview in the other room was constant laughter.
Chris O’Dowd is hysterically funny. He and Aziz played off of each other in our interview session, which only reflects the terrific job they did playing off of each other in the movie! Looking at the transcripts from the interviews I am having a hard time relating anything pertinent to you, everything said was part of their comedy routine, especially Chris, he had us in hysterics the whole session.
Which is exactly how they played their characters int he movie! They are a hysterical duo, and yet heroes! We asked how they researched their roles and the answers we received were quite humorous: “And me and Chris went to the woods with a magnifying glass and followed a snail and slug around for a couple of months.” said Aziz. Mr. O’Dowd said, “I had a slug farm, so like I felt like I was already one step ahead, yes like an ant farm.” This is how the interview went the entire time, these guys were hysterically funny!!
And the question that I ask at every interview session where the actors are acting in an animated movie is, how much do they actually work together: Aziz: “We did the first main session together, and then we both were traveling around for our different filming commitments, so we were separated. But, we did the first long session together, which was very fun.” Chris: “We were kind of away, so I did a little bit of it in Ireland, a little bit in London, a little bit in LA and some here in New York.” What I gleaned from this part of the interview is that there was very little ad libbing, which means the script stands alone in its awesome writing. These guys should separately do a comedy show together and but I could see if they ad libbed this script it would have been all over the place. And doing the first long work session together I am sure helped set the tone for their characters great rapport.
The subject of action figures also came up, can you imagine? The guys both agreed they would be very slow action figures!
And the most important part of the interview, and a spoiler from the movie, Slugs don’t have shells! We found that out the hard way in the movie, “No shell over herr.”
