My family was treated to a fun filled Saturday night yesterday! First a stop at the Times Square location of Dave & Buster’s for a couple of hours of good eating and game playing, and then on to the New Victory Theater!
I should first mention that our time at the restaurant began with a complimentary performance class! We were taught by professionals from the New Victory Family Workshop department on how to put on your own personal performance in front of a live audience! I love how these good teachers know how to start their students off with the smallest of tasks that later build into a full show. Simple and fun!
We then walked right across the street. The show we were treated to was called “Urban:”
“From the barrios of Cali, Colombia, comes URBAN, a take-no-prisoners acrobatic tour de force that balances risk and reward, defiance and delight. An original commission for CircusFest 2010 at London’s Roundhouse, Circolombia’s autobiographical show features jaw-dropping acts that “have an edginess that lift them above the everyday” (The Stage). Vigor, danger and attitude infuse every pounding beat, from the phenomenal feats of strength to the tremendous trapeze, tightrope and triple dutch routines. Thumping reggaeton underscores lyrics like escribe con los pies, poeta de la calle—write with your feet, poet of the street—galvanizing audiences with awe-inspiring acrobatics, rich rhythms and exuberant energy.”
The show was phenomenal. The athleticism by the dancers, the acrobatics right in front of us in this cozy theater, and the fantastic beat of the music, all lent themselves to an evening of wonderful entertainment. The most difficult part for me was not getting up and dancing in the aisle, the type of music in the show is exactly what I love to jam out to. I characterize it as a combination of some Spanish style music (not at all like any of the Salsa classes I have taken though!) and a lot of hip hop. Just what I like. And mucho acrobatic like feats of enjoyment, each with a story behind them. This was great entertainment for the whole family: my spouse and son also had a great time.
The theater is located in the heart of Times Square, in NYC.This is a great stop on your visit to the Big Apple, please check for more information and the full schedule at NewVictoryTheater.com.
They are also on Facebook and Twitter!
