We just got Skype on my iPad and then Logitech asked me to review their new TV Cam, taking this great experience to a new level. A great new technology allowing you to Skype from your TV direct to any other Skype user you are connected to. My parents live upstate and my niece installed Skype on their iPad 2 so now my son can talk to his grandparents while sitting in our living room!
The set up could not be easier, you just plug in the HDMI connection to your TV. You do need a high speed Internet connection and an HDTV. We have wireless Internet in our house, and you can also use an Ethernet connection if you are not set up for wireless. And of course you need a Skype account, but those are easy to sign up for. I took some snap shots of what my folks could see on their iPad in their house, of us. They get a full view of us sitting at home! My son can also play his drums for grandma and grandpa, show them his art work, or just about anything since the viewing screen we can offer them is so much larger than from a smaller device like a computer or tablet.
At the introduction event for this device we Skyped with Dee Wallace, the mom from the movie E.T. Do you get the inside joke? E.T. phone home.
Can you even spot the Logitech TV cam? It is barely visible under our TV next to all the other contraptions we own (that’s another issue!)
This is a fantastic new way to stay in touch with family and friends. And, this is the perfect holiday gift, especially for grandparents to be able to see their families so clearly and in a much larger picture than the old methods of Skyping. It is an awesome way to see more of your family and friends and what they are doing, and allows them to see so much more than just a small face on a screen. Just make sure the relatives have the necessary basics mentioned above!
