Every summer for the past 4 years I have sent my son on the bus to upstate New York to go to day camp.
We did a lot of research and decided for our son’s needs, the 92nd Street Y, offered the best summer camp option. They were know for their great staff, fantastic activities, and the location is minutes away from my parents home!
I love that the city kids get out and enjoy the country life. What that means is enjoying nature and at the same time complaining about all the bugs! We have very few of those here in the big city.
And, as I have written about before, the wonderful community that we have built in the big city, also encompasses this camp! My son’s bus stop consists of many children from his elementary school. His summer camp group consists of boys and girls he has met at the various spring baseball leagues he has been in, and folks from his Hebrew school! I think it is wonderful that we can live in such a huge city and yet see our friends from all over in different places in or lives.
And the camp is phenomenal. He had several different electives this year, chess, cooking, basketball, archery, and many more. The experiences he gets to have at this amazing camp are well worth the money we pay. And yes, my son and his archery skills, will be my Olympics ticket one day!
And now it’s over, This summer is flying by faster than any summer has before. And my son is now a graduate of Camp Yomi. It is a 4 year program, and we completed it. We look forward to having these folks in our lives again, but for now, we thank the 92nd Street Y for providing such a wonderful camp experience for our son.
So thank-you 92nd St Y, you guys did a fantastic job with my son and the other kids, we are very grateful for the absolutely wonderful 4 years we have had!

I love all the options for city kids to spend the summer outside. I still remember so fondly my days at camp in upstate New York with all New York City kids, and me from Virginia. I knew then NYC was the place for me!
Only you can make posing with the Yomi bear look like a red carpet event 😉 Summer camp is such an amazing experience for kids! What’s really great here is that your boy got to attend the entire four years of the program, being able to start something longer term & see it through till the program’s end is a great experience for him!
Your son is very fortunate to be able to do this. It is an experience he will remember the rest of his life. And these years will go by faster and faster and faster!
This made me laugh. I can show them bugs down here in Arkansas. Doesn’t get cold enough usually to kill them out. I know we are all spoiled to our air conditioning, but kids do still need to get outside, of course, not when it’s 100, but mornings or early evenings.
