Manhattan Movement & Arts Center, New York’s preeminent family friendly venue, presented family performances to benefit Save the Children on Saturday, and I had the privilege to attend!
The benefit on Saturday, December 10, 2011 included a party featuring The Amazing Max at 2pm followed by a performance of Freckleface Strawberry The Musical at 3pm at the Manhattan Movement & Arts Center. Called “Fast, funny, and entertaining for all ages!” by The New York Times, Freckleface Strawberry The Musical is the story of little Freckleface Strawberry who with the help of her lovable schoolmates, including an amazingly talented ballerina, a cutie jock, a charming ditz, and a totally kooky teacher, learns that everyone is different and that’s what makes everyone special!
Academy Award-nominated actress Julianne Moore, author of the original NY Times Best Selling, Freckleface Strawberry book, was in attendance. It was very exciting to meet her in person and explain that my son was apprehensive at first to see the show, he thought it was going to be a girly play. It was not, it was perfect for boys and girls, and we all loved it, my review is the first half of this post here.
To continue the festive events to support Save the Children, there was also a special performance of PETER PANtomime, with Tina Fey in attendance.
PETER PANtomime, a holiday workshop performance of the classic Peter Pan story, PETER PANtomime is presented in a joyful holiday Pantomime Production for kids by kids. An all singing and all dancing panto with tapping, flying feet takes Wendy, Peter, and the gang from Nursery to Neverland! Nana, the dog, keeps watch over her wards in more ways than they ever imagined! Crow with Peter, cheer for Tinkerbell, and boo for Captain Hook. Produced by Shuffles and MMAC. All proceeds from these events benefited Save the Children.
About Save the Children
Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world. Recognized for our commitment to accountability, innovation and collaboration, our work takes us into the heart of communities, where we help children and families help themselves. We work with other organizations, governments, non-profits and a variety of local partners while maintaining our own independence without political agenda or religious orientation.
When disaster strikes around the world, Save the Children is there to save lives with food, medical care and education and remains to help communities rebuild through long-term recovery programs. As quickly and as effectively as Save the Children responds to tsunamis and civil conflict, it works to resolve the ongoing struggles children face every day – poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease – and replaces them with hope for the future.
