Christmas Eve always starts at my in-laws. We open gifts and share family time with the “immediate” family of 16 people. We then move on to 1 of my mother-in-law’s sister’s houses She has 4 sisters so it is always a surprise which house we will end up at!
These are Italians so people always ask me if they are going to have the traditional 7 fishes at Christmas Eve. My in-laws do not remember where that comes from so if anyone can help, that would be great. However many fish are represented, trust me there is enough food to feed more then the 50 relatives that show up at these shindigs!
I am especially happy when the mix of family includes some cousins around my son’s age so he is entertained for the evening. He is usually holding on to what ever gift he has just received, tonight it was drum sticks that light up. Yes he is taking drum lessons, and yes, he is the little drummer boy!

Feast of the Seven Fishes is a regional Italian custom, not all of Italy follows the custom.

My parents are from Tottenville/Pleasant Plains. I love Staten Island! My mother is Italian, so Christmas Eve is still quite an event, even though it’s a little further up the Hudson now.
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and Happy New Year to you, too!
