My son first brought this movie to my attention and I was quite surprised that he was interested in a movie about a girl, my son is a tough guy after all. When I saw the ad on top of a local Manhattan cab, I then understood. Judy is a girl, but not one of those princess obsessed ones. That would not have worked for my son. After viewing the commercial where her friend throws up on her on the roller coaster, I needed no further evidence that this was the perfect movie to entertain my newly turned 8 year old son. He even claims to be reading the books in school, I can only hope!
He is not verbose so I can only sum up his personal review of the movie by telling you he said it was awesome and he loved it. Again, it was not at all a girly movie, it was quite adventuresome, and very entertaining. He was totally enthralled the whole movie, also because it showed kids in the next grade up from his (3rd grade). Me, as long as the kid is happy, I am happy!
The movie starts out with this 9 year old girl trying to plan her summer around some thrilling, fun activities that she and her friends can enjoy. She is afraid the summer is going to be boring like they have been in the past. Of course, one by one, her friends develop other plans and Judy is getting quite moody! Will her fear of another boring summer come true?
This is when her Aunt Opal shows up. Heather Graham does a great job as the Aunt. She actually reminds me of my own sister, who when she comes on the scene, totally turns my son’s day into an adventure.
Heather Graham plays that terrific kind of Aunt who kids feel they can rely on to be honest with them and not try to change or manipulate their behavior (like us parents). I loved this character. Of course she is also fun and zany, and the kids always end up happier for her presence. She is bohemian and relaxed, again, nothing like what us parents are! I have not read the books yet but I do hope she shows up in the other movies that I am sure will follow upon the success of this first Judy Moody movie!
And don’t forget, for those of us who grew up with Urkel, the adult Jaleel White plays a fun role in this movie as well!
Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer opens on June 10, 2011, be sure to take the kids!
