First, I was surprised to wake up and find that school in NYC was not cancelled.
It seemed a bit hazardous for the school buses in the outer boroughs.
For us, it is a simple 4 block walk to school. Stick on a pair of boots an off we go.
The email from the Principal said school was on and all field trips were cancelled. How did that affect our plan? My 2nd grade son is studying the community. We went to the local public library on Monday, and today we were supposed to go to the local Police precinct – it’s only 1 1/2 blocks away!
Well, my sassy 2nd grade teacher figured the kids came to school in boots, they might just as well walk the little bit to stay on the curriculum schedule. I like that in a teacher, forge on ahead, don’t take the easy way out with your students!
Protocol demanded that the Principal call the Chancellor’s office to get permission. There is red tape everywhere!.
As a stay at home dad, I get to go on a lot of field trips. If only to keep an eye on my wild guy!
At least this was a very interesting experience, my favorite part was when all the kids were put in a jail cell! I said keep them over night! Just kidding.
They also had their finger prints taken. They enjoyed getting the dirty ink on their fingers. It doesn’t take much to entertain this age group!
5 students on each field trip are given a question to ask. They are 7 year old interviewers. It is a wonder to watch and listen. Today my son was one of the 5 and asked, “What do you do?” If only we had 7 hours for that answer! The officers were very nice and answered all the kids questions, with the teacher guiding the kids and the officers, so that helped everything go much smoother.
All in all, it was a lot of fun to visit the local police precinct, and I look forward to visiting the fire station with the class next week! Wouldn’t it be great if this old fool remembered his camera next time too!

Wow, that is so neat that the kids got to visit a precinct…. and ended up behind bars! Lmaoo!!! You are lucky that you’re able to go on so many of the class trips – I hope I have flexibility in my schedule by the time my boys are of school age.

This was one of my favorite class trips as a kid! I was scary to get locked up in the jail! I’m glad the trip didn’t get cancelled. Don’t forget the camera next time! LOL
