Just a bit of social/political commentary to round out the year and start the new one, from yours truly.
In my humble opinion, Jon Stewart, the Daily Show, and their many brilliant writers are one of the countries last bastions of hope. While the lies come at us at a furious pace, we at least have hope when we tune into the Daily Show and hear truth. The truth is not made up, it is not the lies of Fox TV. How do we know? The Daily Show format is very simple. Back to back historical pieces from past shows archived all over the Internet to show the absurdity of some of the biggest liars in America.
Lets start with a simple example from Glenn Beck. About 2-3 years ago he had a procedure done in an American hospital and he complained rigorously from his hospital bed how bad health care was in America. Clearly he was speaking from first hand experience. This was during the George Bush presidency. Actual video was shown.
Cut to 1 year later when Obama is President and Glenn Beck is crying, why would we change the American health care system that is the best in the world? He only makes this statement out of his hatred for our democratically elected President, it is not based on his own personal experience, it is quite the opposite, as per the words out of his own mouth. My question is, why would he so blatantly lie to America? For money. That’s the American way. Thank goodness the geniuses on Jon Stewart’s show do their research and find these simple clips from this enormous liar. The shame is that people hear only one side of the discussion and believe the great American liar.
The second wonderful example of the Daily Show’s amazing work was a clip from a month ago of John McCain. The maverick. They cut and pasted Mr. McCain’s quotes from each year of his 30 years in office. “We need change.” He says this every year. The change never occurs. And he never initiates it either. When this montage was created we got to see that the change Mr McCain preaches is the change he has not brought forth in 30 years. Lucky for him people forget from 1 year to the next that he is actually doing nothing towards his supposed goal of change.
I would also like to point out that the Daily Show’s piece on helping to push politicians to approve health care money for our sick 9/11 workers was brilliant. Congress was complaining about working over the holidays. Do the fireman and policeman who protect us 24/7 have the same complaint? What if they did? Earlier clips of all our Congressional folks praising the 9/11 workers and cutting to their “Nay” votes for the bill, was also very powerful. This is one reason I love the Internet, sometimes there is nowhere to hide!
So thank goodness for the Daily Show, it can’t keep our politicians and fake newsmen honest, but it can show us in a very clear format, with these peoples own words, how they are lying to our faces.
