I had the great fortune to be invited back to the Times Square Disney Store for the introduction of the brand new Epic Mickey for Wii. As part of the introduction of this groundbreaking video, 2 of ABC’s very famous Dancing With the Stars contestants were on hand. I already posted my picture with Jennifer Grey, it was fantastic that she was part of the great moment for Disney. You will see the other star below in my paparazzi pics.
Disney is already loaded down with princesses, and as the father of a 7 1/2 year old boy, I was thrilled with this video introduction. It is not the same Mickey you knew as a toddler. It is a much tougher character, something my son really responded to as you can tell from my post last week: https://www.gaynycdad.com/2010/11/disney-videos-are-awesome.html.
To recap:
Epic Mickey is an action-adventure game that sends Mickey on a journey of creativity and discovery. As Mickey, the player journeys toWasteland, an alternate world with lands inspired by Disney’s animated films and theme parks, and is given the power to wield paint and paint thinner to dynamically change the world and determine Mickey’s path to becoming an epic hero.
The key feature of the game is the magic paint brush, which Mickey wields, that has the ability to draw or erase objects, using paint and thinner respectively. For example, obstacles can be erased from physical existence using the thinner and then restored using the paint, or enemies can be friended by revitalizing them with the paint or destroyed completely using the thinner. Mickey is also able to materialize objects from sketches, which have various effects. Two of the sketches, the clock and the television, slow down time and distract enemies, respectively.
Both fluids have limited reserves, adding a strategic element to gameplay: players must compromise between making various tasks harder or easier to accomplish. However, the fluids automatically but slowly refill and power-ups that quickly replenish the fluids are available in certain areas.
To travel between sections of the Wasteland, Mickey traverses 2D side-scrolling levels based on his classic cartoon shorts, such as Steamboat Willie and Clock Cleaners. (Thanks wikipedia.)
No princesses here! As I had said last week, my son loved this video. I think it will appeal to the adventure in all of us, and using Mickey history only makes it more compelling!
But, don’t believe this poor blogger, Epic Mickey has been getting rave reviews all over the Internet!
Here I am trying the game with the wonderful Onica of Mommy Factor fame!
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
And don’t let me forget my paparazzi pic with Kyle Massey from “That’s So Raven” and “Cory in the House” on the Disney Channel, and of course most recently a season finalist on “Dancing with the Stars!”
Thank-you Disney for a great morning and a great video!
Disclosure: I did receive a copy of Epic Mickey for the Wii to review. All opinions herein expressed are my own and my son’s, he is my video reviewer!
