Before my son was born his other dad and I had to figure out what he would call us. I had waited my whole life to have a child and wanted very much to be called dad. This was not to be a “mom” and “dad” situation!
My spouse was leaning towards “Pop,” but his dad is called Poppi, and that sounded to similar.
I decided it would be best if we were called the same thing, so we decided to be called daddy Mitch and daddy Peter. I felt this would put us on equal footing and that was an important consideration for me. Do straight people have these issues?
So, now I have dozens of kids. How? My son was in day care when he was younger because he had 2 working parents. I was always the one to pick him up so all the kids heard him yell out “daddy Mitch!” In a short time, the teachers would call me daddy Mitch and the other dad, daddy Peter. Soon all the kids in my son’s class called me daddy Mitch because they saw me often and they heard me called that all the time. To this day, even some parents in our public school call me daddy Mitch.
I could not be happier. I love having people call me daddy Mitch, especially my son’s pre-K friends, the little boys and girls he grew up with. I waited a very long time to be a parent so the most precious name/title/job I could have is daddy, and I love that it is ubiquitous!
