BLOG WARNING:
This was our family day in NYC, trying to substitute activities since we were not in Disney which turned out to be OK. We filled up the week with family and activities (there is not a Zoo left in the tri-state area that we have not visited!). In hindsight the following account would have been better with pictures, but I was all camered out! Proceed at yor own risk!
We met up in the middle of the city as we all had had errands. My spouse showed up with my son, and the story as always was he complained about walking the whole time. In NYC you walk a lot. My son continually asks to take taxi-cabs, I sure wish I had the money to accommodate him!
The N train takes you almost to the opening of the Central Park Zoo. We had a nice visit, although it is much smaller than the Bronx Zoo and seems to be falling into disrepair. To a 7 year old it is sufficient. And there is a Children’s Zoo across the way to top it off, so he was a happy boy!
The big climbing rock north of the Zoo is referred to as Balto’s rock by my son as there is a Balto statue nearby. And we read the book so it has some meaning for us. There is also a fun little park just to the east with a stone slide. All the kids slide down on cardboard, there must be a cardboard fairy somewhere as there was a lot of pieces for the many kids to use. We got my son out of the park by bribery….
Now we headed to Dylan’s Candy Bar. Owned by the daughter of designer Ralph Lauren, it is a magnificent candy store that several friends of my son talk about constantly! He was so excited to go! We bought Jelly Beans from an assortment of 4000 flavors, that was not easy. We filled a tube with multi-colored sugar, that was horrifying. And we bought a hospital looking bag of candy blood, we are so Goth! http://www.dylanscandybar.com/
I had surveyed the area earlier and decided we were close enough to the uptown branch of the Peking Duck House. We had gone a few weeks earlier with a friend and not had the duck, so we needed to get that out of our system. And this is a favorite spot of my sisters so of course we mentioned her name and they had no idea who she was! She is really very famous in her own mind! (Like me!) We had a delicious lunch there and my son was thrilled with the terrific day he had, he actually told us so. How wonderful is it when your kids doesn’t complain! http://www.pekingduckhousenyc.com/
A fun bus ride home ended our Manhattan adventure. If you are willling to keep spending money the sky is the limit in this city! At least I did not have to wear Mickey Mouse ears!
