Again, I am one lucky New York blogger, the Grain Foods Foundation invited me to an event! It was a tough decision as to whether or not to go. Yeah right, they were feeding me and Paula Deen’s handsome son’s were going to be there! That’s a no brainer!
First, the background: the Grain Foods Foundation is dedicated to advancing the public’s understanding of the important role grain-based foods play in the human diet. Living a healthy lifestyle is all about achieving balance — between mind and body, health and fitness, and even in dietary choices like whole and enriched grains. (I have a 7 year old son. I vowed never to buy white bread for him. Luckily in NYC I am able to buy a myriad of whole wheat/whole grain products, even hot dog buns.)
The Bread Art Project: This spring, the Grain Foods Foundation teamed up with Food Network host Melissa d’Arabian and Share Our Strength®, a non-profit leading the charge to end childhood hunger in America by 2015. Together, we helped give hungry children in our country access to nutritious meals. See more at http://www.breadartproject.com/.
So, the upshot of the event was to encourage families to have sandwiches for dinner 1 night a week. I don’t want to mention the store, but my son already does that, he loves to have it his way and pick out his own ingredients. That has been my opportunity to teach him about grains, he knows I will only let him choose between the “healthy” breads for his sandwich. Since he knows to add lettuce, tomato, and some other items that change weekly, I feel this is a fun, nutritious, and easy dinner solution for my son who also likes that for the most part, he is in control!
