I waited 2 days and told my son the teacher said all students lose 25% of what they learned, in the summer after 1st grade. UNLESS, they read and kept up over the summer. I asked him if he wanted to be in the smarter half of the class when he got to 2nd grade. I know how to manipulate! He of course said yes and started to read. He was half way through a Cam Jansen baseball mystery at the end of the semester, so he read a chapter of that. The next night he read 3 chapters to finish the book. I fought with him all year to read, and now he is reading 3 chapters without being asked? He is manipulating me! Smart boy! He just wanted to stay up late, he was willing to read in our bed with the other dad to accomplish this goal! He is a tricky one, but we both win so I am OK with that.
Next up is a book by Dav Pilkey, a small series about a fun dragon. I am working really hard to find books that appeal to my son so his interest in reading is maintained, without getting him all super hero books.
I am also a cornball parent, when he reads signs, etc. in the street I am thrilled. Even when he did it yesterday, an ad on the side of a u-haul, about snakes. And it was 101 degrees! His education is worth my heat exhaustion!
