Head to Chinatown in lower Manhattan!
The best kept secret of New York City is the aquarium trip available just by heading to Chinatown. It started off at the fish markets on Grand Street. Many tanks with fresh fish for sale, a feast for my son’s eyes! The action is great, sometimes you get to see shrimp trying to escape by jumping out of their boxes!
After lunch we ended walking up Mott Street and it was better than a trip to the Brooklyn Aquarium. The bottom picture is of a fish just brought out of the tank to show customers how fresh the fish are (you can’t get more fresh than still being alive!), you can see this guy is still jumping around. My son and I loved this place!
Next was the tub of frogs, fresh for Sunday dinner! I offered to buy them to make frog legs but my son declined. They were quite a lively crew.
The top 2 pictures are the many fish tanks in a delicious Dim Sum restaurant that I would have been happy to eat in after our earlier lunch, caution to the wind, I like to eat! My son is outside the restaurant, and I am inside, so you get views from the both sides. And these tanks can be found all over Chinatown!
We had a blast walking around viewing the restaurant tanks and the open fish markets. There was more activity in some of those fish stores than we see in the “real” aquariums! I heartily suggest you do this very NY thing and walk the streets of Chinatown, enjoy the real New York, and create your own aquarium trip!

Great Idea! Love it! Any suggestions on ending the day with the obligatory playground visit?? Any good ones nearby?

We sometimes go to a Dim Sum restaurant under the Manhattan Bridge (Triple 8) and there is a playground right underneath. Or, walk east and there is a large playground just south of Grand Street. My son loves all playgrounds!
