And I have developed a great disdain for the language. My son is in first grade so I assist the school in teaching him when we do homework. My son is smart, he is right on target with his reading and writing, but there are so many rules and twice as many exceptions, thereby confusing any young student and frustrating any parent!
A dog has a bone. My son knows how to spell own, which impressed me, and he spells bown, not bone. For a 1st grader, this makes perfect sense. How do I tell him he is wrong, when he is doing as good as one can expect for his age.
I go to the park. Noah had an ark. I draw half circles that form an arc. Why aren’t the words spelled the same? Who made these crazy rules? Why does our language have so many mistakes?
