The day started out innocuous enough. I had 30 minutes to read in my son’s school’s cafeteria. Because I am so aged, I went for a potty brake before the field trip, and lo and behold, after a 6 week hiatus, was his lost jacket that I had checked daily for and all of a sudden appeared in the lost and found. It will fit another season so I was quite happy, albeit confused as to how it actually hid for a time.
The 1st graders are studying the local parks. Today’s trip was to Madison Square Park, almost a 1 mile trek round trip. Can you tell where I am heading? That’s a lot for these 6 and 7 year olds, and they have to behave on top of that. And for those of you not in Manhattan, we had to cross some busy streets! Of course, with me there, my son is a little whiny: I am hungry, I am tired, I want to go where I want to go, etc. Many kids were getting scolded for one little infraction or another. Why must we all be tortured so? I say tortured because there is a total of 4 of these park field trips. That’s overkill, especially when I want them to drill him on Math tables! But, we all survived! I will say that I learned that there is an art exhibition going on, there are 31 male statues in and surrounding this park –
“In Event Horizon, thirty-one life-size body forms of the artist cast in iron and fiberglass will inhabit the pathways and sidewalks of historic Madison Square Park, as well as the rooftops of the many architectural treasures that populate New York’s vibrant Flatiron District. Event Horizon marks Gormley’s United States public art debut — milestone for an artist whose work has garnered worldwide acclaim over the past 25 years.”
That’s the picture above. What impressed me was that the art was on building rooftops from 23-26th street, as well as in the park itself. I loved that idea.
I then moved on to my appointment with a counselor for my son to talk to. I want to make sure he has enough tools to get through the structured environment of school. Ask him, he says he has anger management issues! Don’t we all!
You can’t hit a moving target, me, I then raced to school to pick him up for a dental check-up. We had not been in a while, I did not love the over billing I had to deal with the last time. A mom I had just met on our new T-Ball team recommended someone and I must say I thought she did a terrific job. All my son needed to know was that he wasn’t getting a shot. Otherwise he handles all his doctor appointments like a trooper.
Lastly, on the way home, he asks to go to the “creamy soup place.” 1 1/2 years ago we stopped at a diner on the way home from a pediatric visit and I ordered a cream of chicken soup. He has not forgotten that soup. I didn’t know what he was talking about when he brought it up for the first time after the initial visit, now he still scolds me for not having a good memory! But, that’s my son, remembers every good meal he ever had!
