Wordless Wednesday – Bethenny Frankel Gets Hammocked! w/Linky!

Sorry folks, I had nothing else!

Celebrities

I love meeting celebs at events and snagging a picture with them. It’s fun, I post it all over, and I create a mystery cachet for myself. At least in my own mind.

But what happens when you see a celeb in the wild? Not at an event where they are obligated to be nice and cordial, and say yes to the picture when they would really rather run away from you?

Well, when my husband pointed out that Rosie O’Donnell had just walked into the restaurant we were eating in, I started plotting a plan of action. Why? Because, I have been a huge fan of Miss O’Donnell’s since the beginning of her career. Why? Because her story helped to inspire me to adopt my son. Also, she is one of the few celebs on my bucket list to meet in my lifetime. So what to do? Well, being a social media genius, I tweeted her and left it in my higher power’s hands. Then I gave my son my blackberry to play with while I silently tried not to obsess. We all know that couldn’t possibly work:

@gaynycdad At dinner celebrating my gay marriage and my idol @Rosie walks in! I am verklempt!

I then took the phone back from my son to check my messages:

@Rosie @gaynycdad – come say hello

OMG! She called my bluff! What do I do? Our appetizers had just come to the table so I grabbed the hubby and kid and said we have to go NOW, I knew Rosie hadn’t received any food yet and I wanted to be as unobtrusive as possible.

And she was wonderful. And true to form,  I just had to get that picture! Yes, I am obsessed with collecting celeb pictures. By the way, her new wife was gorgeous and very nice while I stumbled all over myself and my iPad.

She then chatted with my son and asked if he wanted a picture. We are working on getting his blog up and running so we both said YES!

All my son could repeat that evening was that Rosie O’Donnell said he was cute. I am not fully sure he knows who she is, but he was thrilled. And again, she was part of my inspiration to adopt my son, she gets a mention in my adoption story.

Afterwards I thanked her and went back to our celebration, my parents and sister were taking us out to dinner to celebrate our marriage. How fitting we should meet someone who did so much for this cause as well! And now I could relax enough to eat!

I got home and tweeted a thank-you to Ro, and lo and behold, she has over 500,000 followers, and added 1 new person to the less than 2,000 that she is following!

“Rosie O’Donnell (@Rosie) is now following you on Twitter!”

It was a fun night!

Review & Giveaway – $75 Zarbee’s Natural Cough Products Package!

Going to blog events for brands you already use makes for easy writing. I have had Zarbee’s in the house for a couple of years now. I wish I knew about it when my son was younger, it feels like he had a night cough for the first 3 winters of his life. And when we finally found some medicines that helped, I would have felt much better if they had been natural products.

My favorite ingredient in any cough suppressant product is honey. I clearly remember the moratorium on giving honey to children under 2 years old, it probably only referred to the raw honey I would buy at the farmers market, but I wasn’t taking any chances. Well, Zarbee’s uses plenty of honey, and you can be sure it is not raw, and it is safe for the toddlers. That’s important information! The other ingredient that I have been raving about for years, and it’s all natural and in these products, is zinc gluconate.

The Zarbee’s line is expanding, they all contain only all natural ingredients, and no alcohol! And be sure to check out the nighttime children’s formula, it contains melatonin, a natural ingredient that I have used for long night flights to Europe, so I know it will help the little ones to sleep better!

For more info check the Zarbee’s website here. Click here to go directly to the request free samples page!

Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest updates!

And here I am with Kristin Davis who attended the launch event for Zarbee’s new all natural extra strength line of cough products for adults and children 12 and up at The Kimberly Hotel. In addition to introducing the new products, the event was a celebration of individuals that are an inspiration to their families and communities. Zarbee’s is committed to keeping them healthy so they can continue to do amazing things!

Kristin Davis’s Healthy Tips for New Moms

  • · Eat Right
Prepare healthy meals and snacks (like brown rice) when you have a few minutes so you can throw it in the refrigerator and have something healthy on hand when you get the chance to eat.
  • · Go Natural
Rely on natural products you can trust, especially when you get sick. You can’t be at your best when you feel terrible! I love Zarbee’s because it’s an all natural product that helps with coughs and allergies without making me drowsy.
  • · Make Time for Yourself
It is hectic being a mom so try to carve out some “me” time during the day – even just a minute to breathe and assess what you need so you can be at your best for your baby.

Back to School With Crest/Oral-B and Jennie Garth!

I attended an event for my favorite toothpaste brand this week, Crest. Crest and Oral-B have teamed up with actress Jennie Garth, and her 9 year old daughter, Lola, to encourage parents and their children to brush up on their oral hygiene as the back to school season nears.

This was fun for me to see as my son is the same age as Lola. He has an evening routine that is not affected by the seasons: bath, bed, and book, were rituals established early on as my sister-in-law instructed me when my son was young. This works while we are on a school or day camp schedule. But that ends in a week, and then we have no commitments until school starts, and from what I have seen on Facebook from my friends around the country, school in some states started this week! We will need to be reminded of our routine right after Labor Day as we prepare to head to 4th grade.

My real issue is time. My son has an electric toothbrush that I purchased for him because I thought it would inspire him to brush more, and to brush better. The problem is, he can’t tell 20 seconds from 2 minutes. I even have a clock on the bathroom cabinet mirror!

The above is the Oral-B pro-health electric toothbrush. It runs for 2 minutes. This is exactly what my son needs so he brushes longer! I love that his tween group is getting this extra recognition as well:

“Crest and Oral-B are making it easier than ever to maintain healthy oral care habits this school year by introducing products to its kid-focused lines that make the process fun and worry-free for all ages. Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health FOR ME™, the FIRST complete line of oral care products for tweens (kids eight and up), has launched a new electric toothbrush to address oral care issues affecting this specific age group, particularly those with braces.”

Yes, these toothbrushes are designed with children’s braces in mind, and thank goodness for that, my son will be in braces within 2 years.

There is also Oral-B Stages, designed for children ranging from four months to seven years of age. Each age group has different needs, from baby teeth starting to come in, to the toddler 20 set of teeth, to the Kindergarten group who are starting to lose their baby teeth. And, they have added a Disney® favorite, Jake and the Neverland Pirates™, to the product line! Too young for my son, but I have a tube for my 3 year old neighbor who will be very excited.

Please use this post as a reminder to get those teeth brushing routines back in time for your own back to school, whenever that is, within the next 4 weeks. And as I show and tell my son, you don’t want to grow up with the number of cavities I had, so brush!

More information about Oral-B Stages and Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health FOR ME is available at oralb.com/stages and crestprohealth.com.

Like Crest and Oral-B on Facebook or follow them on Twitter @Crest, @OralB to receive updates from the brands and learn more about children’s dental care.

Disclosure: I received a gift bag for attending the event. All opinions are 100% my own and honest.

And of course, my celeb picture with Miss Jennie Garth!

Wordless Wednesday – Soccer @EA’s FIFA13 With Linky!

Tottenham Hotspur, top English soccer team, came to Grand Central Station in NYC last week to play EA’s new video game, FIFA13! My son got a picture with Aaron Lennon, and I got one with Jake Livermore. You cannot beat the blog life!

I was familiar with the team because I used to collect old soccer jerseys. To mingle with them and watch my son play the video game right next to them was phenomenal. FIFA13 is a hit!

Disclosure: I received no compensation for this post.

Summer Olympics Inspire Fat Kid!

I was a chubby tween/teen. I was a nerd. I was a book worm, and I was pre-gay, if there is such a thing.

Then the 1972 Summer Olympics came along. I fell in love with these amateur sports. I felt they represented what was best in an athlete. The women’s gymnastics were my favorite sport to watch. Olga Korbut ruled that year. She was amazing.

And Mark Spitz garnered 7 Olympic Gold Medals for swimming. He became my hero. And, I also would like to point out it wasn’t a gay crush, handsome as he was. It was purely inspirational.

So I joined the jogging club at school. Then I took swim lessons. I joined a summer swim team. I joined the High School Varsity Swim team in 9th grade while I was still physically in Junior High School, but I was eligible. I walked miles to catch the bus to the college for practices. I was never anywhere near being a top swimmer, but there were not enough swimmers that anyone was ever “cut” from the team so I continued to persevere. I even had a school record for 10 days, until the other swimmers woke up! Unfortunately swimming was taken out of our school budget in 11th grade, but I swam on an AAU swim team in 12th grade. I even achieved a 2nd place finish in one intercollegiate swim race. I was so proud. And I don’t care that it was the week the whole of NYS had the flu!

I continued to swim varsity in college! Again, there were not enough swimmers that anyone was cut from the roster, so I persevered. As long as you showed up to practice you were able to stay on the team. One of my dorm supporters came to my swim meets and nicknamed me Mitch the fish. Thank-you Nancy M. for that! I even joined the Swim Team on their yearly sojourn to the International Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. We raised money at our college’s football games and then drove the 24 hours down south. And I swam at the International Swimming Hall of Fame!

The Olympics inspired this overweight, unathletic, unhappy middle schooler years ago. It helped me to build some self esteem, and it gave me memories I will never forget. I will be forever grateful.

And my son and my spouse both have instructions to bury me with my Ramapo High School Swim Jacket with varsity letter. If it doesn’t fit on me, bury it next to me! That was the most important thing I did for myself, earning that jacket and letter, as a teenager!

As an adult, one of the myriad gifts that I have receive from the blog world is the chance to meet some real Olympians. Below are my pictures with some Gold Medal Heroes, they continue to inspire me today and always!

Swimming – Summer Sanders

Swimming – Aaron Peirsol

Runner – Sanya Richards

Skating – Apolo Ohno

Gymnastics – Dominique Dawes

Track & Field – Carl Lewis

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, My Interview!

“During his summer vacation, “Wimpy Kid” Greg Heffley, the hero of the phenomenally successful book series, hatches a plan to pretend he has a job at a ritzy country club – which fails to keep him away from the season’s dog days, including embarrassing mishaps at a public pool and a camping trip that goes horribly wrong.”

My son’s interview with the stars of the new Wimpy Kid movie went up yesterday. Today is my turn:

At the blogger press junket, the adult bloggers were invited to continue the discussion with author Jeff Kinney in a small round table setting, while the kids played upstairs. It was the mommy bloggers, and me. I love these discussions, it is not only fun to talk with a famous author, but when we are all parents, we get to tackle subjects from a different perspective. I can’t imagine how it must be on a press junket when hundreds of people ask you the same questions. We try to be a little different. I hope we succeed!

Blogger: I just want to say two days before I was invited to attend the Wimpy press day, or I even knew about the movie release, my son & I were fighting about summer reading. My son’s going into fourth grade and he picked up the Wimpy Kid book.
Mr. Jeff Kinney: Oh, really?
Blogger: You may have saved his whole educational career. So, I have to say thank you.
Mr. Jeff Kinney: Sure. Thank you for the compliment.
Blogger: And what’s next?
Mr. Jeff Kinney: What’s next for me? More books. I’m working on another one right now for the series. I’m also really excited about making an animated TV special, a holiday special, around Wimpy Kid.
And then, I don’t know. I still have a day job, and I’m working on trying to develop another television show as well.
Blogger: Maybe Wimpy Kid gets married in 10 years!
Mr. Jeff Kinney: I hope not!

(Round 2, this time I remembered to identify myself! Hey, this was my first !)

Blogger: Hi, I am Mitch from GayNYCDad.com. Two things. Did your kids always realize you were a famous figure?
Mr. Jeff Kinney: I think that it’s been a progressive experience for them, because they started off younger than the age group that reads these books. And now my older son has almost grown out of the age group that reads these books.
At first it was that the older kids in their school would say, “Hey, your dad wrote those books that I read.” And then, it kind of got to where they were in the sweet spot, in a way. And my younger son is just entering into that.
They’ve always seen me speak, and experience a lot of situations where I’m on stage. From the very beginning, my older son, he saw me in front of a bunch of preschoolers talking one time and he got up there and started talking too, because he thought he was supposed to, right? Now whenever I’m on stage, they’re happy to get up on stage too.
They’ve got that bug and I think it’s great. It’s a gift if you can make your kids comfortable in front of a crowd.
Blogger: Do you see any characteristics of your kids in your characters?
Mr. Jeff Kinney: I don’t think that my kids are like the characters in the books.
Blogger: I left it broad.
Mr. Jeff Kinney: Although L’il Cutie is modeled after my younger son all the way. As for my older son, there is a baby named Alfrendo in my sixth book, my older son named his doll Alfrendo. So that how he made it into the series.

The most fascinating information that came out of this discussion was that Mr. Kinney started writing these books as journals, with the intent that they might be a book in the humor section for adults. He did not have kids in mind. I hope we got across to him how fantastic this series is for kids, as several other bloggers also mentioned how this series helped a broad spectrum of kids to enjoy reading more because a “perfect” family is not highlighted, characters have many foibles, calamity does happen to all of us, and this is a depiction of what really happens to most if us at some point. Also, the stick figures help to keep the books interesting for kids, the diary style keeps things moving along and is captivating for the readers.

We loved the movie. We are grateful for the opportunity to have met the author and 2 of the stars from the film series, and I will use this for years to come to get my son to read more!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, My Son’s Interview!

In the continuing saga of the remarkable life of a blogging family, my son and I received an invite to preview the newest installment in the Wimpy Kid movie franchise, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. As luck would have it, and this is the truth, my son had picked up this series of books 2 days before we received the invite. It had just saved our summer reading, and then we found out we could actually meet the author of the series and 2 of our favorite actors!

I can’t give away any spoilers until tomorrow’s movie review, all I can say is we loved the movie and everyone needs to see it!

So here is my son asking 2 questions of the cast. Forgive my amateuristic video skills.

My son asked, “Are you like your characters in the movie?”

My son asked, “Do you have a friend like Rowley in middle school?

Many thanks to Jeff Kinney, author of this great series, and actors Zachary Gordon (Greg Heffley) and Robert Capron (Rowley Jefferson).

Disclosure: We were invited on a press junket to review the movie, meet the some of the cast and the author, and eat! Thanks to NYCSingleMom for the great questions.
