Celebrated children’s author/illustrator team and best friends Susan Bernardo and Courtenay Fletcher have recently released their third book The Big Adventures of Tiny House, a picture book that sings “sings the praises of tiny living and the camaraderie of the open road.” (Publishers Weekly).
The Big Adventures of Tiny House is a story about an old farmhouse that gets recycled into something new: TINY, a little house with a big heart – and WHEELS!
Yes, Tiny may be small, but he lives a BIG life. With the help of Big Truck, he travels thousands of miles across America, seeing the sights and attending the Tiny House Jamboree (yes, that’s a real thing – and it’s AWESOME!). Along the way, he and Big Truck make lots of new friends — like Shiny (an Airstream), Waverly(the houseboat) and Buster (a converted school bus). Come along and get to know Tiny as he explores the country and discovers the true meaning of home.
Printed on recycled paper, and made in America, The Big Adventures of Tiny House was inspired by the real-life adventures of Alexis DeHart Stephens and Christian Parsons of Tiny House Expedition. They built their eco-minded THOW (Tiny-House-On-Wheels) from an abandoned farmhouse in their home state of North Carolina and incorporated all kinds of repurposed materials – including curtains made from the discarded fabric of textile mills, and kitchen shelves milled from trees that were knocked down in a tornado. Stephens and Parsons took their house on the road, journeying more than 25,000 miles so far throughout America to advocate for the tiny house movement and film a documentary series titled Living Tiny Legally.
The DIY spirit, creativity and sense of shared purpose that permeates the tiny house movement captured Bernardo’s imagination. While writing the book, she and her long-time collaborator and friend, illustrator Courtenay Fletcher, met many people going small to go big, including tiny house architect Macy Miller whose Great Dane and two small children are featured in one of the book’s vibrant illustrations. (The Miller family just downsized from 220 square feet and set off for a two-year Great American road trip in an 84-foot Aloha trailer that they rebuilt themselves).
Bernardo and Fletcher’s three books together—Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs, The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm (co-written with LeVar Burton), and The Big Adventures of Tiny House—have extended beyond regular readership to aid a variety of non-profits. These include A Window Between Worlds, which uses their books to help families coping with trauma like domestic violence; the Center for Social Justice Works, a non-profit that helps kids stay connected to incarcerated parents; and Cincinnati’s All School Read, where kids from disparate cultures read the same books and engage in activities and discussion together around a central theme such as community.
One lucky reader of the GayNYCDad award winning blog, will receive: a $25 Amazon gift card and all three of Susan and Courtenay’s books: The Big Adventures of Tiny House, The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm (co-written with LeVar Burton), and Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs.
